The Haunting of Hill House spoilers Steven Crane star talks about horrific scene | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

But one particular scene in episode one will be totally unexpected and be the biggest scare of the first instalment of the new series.

Game of Thrones star Michiel Huisman will take on the role of Steven Crane, the eldest sibling in his family.

Steven is a published author of supernatural books, but his most famous work is a memoir about his family’s time living at Hill House.

The Haunting of Hill House is a modern reimagining of Shirley Jackson’s novel of the same name.

It follows five siblings who grew up in “the most famous” haunted house in America.

Now adults, they’re reunited by the suicide of their youngest sister, which forces them to finally confront the ghosts of their own pasts.

The part-psychological thriller, part ghost story will see the characters explore the “ghosts in their minds”, along with ghosts lurking in the house.

Flashing between past and present, the fractured family will be seen to confront haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.

Speaking about the scene that will leave viewers jumping in episode one, Michiel teased it was “exciting”.

Michiel exclusively told “That was very exciting. Because the title of the first episode, although we don’t really get to see that anymore, is Steven Sees A Ghost.

“So the whole episode builds up to that moment, basically. But then you have to do it! And how do you do it?

“How do you see someone without seeing that it’s a ghost. I’m not really seeing her. So I’m glad it worked out. I was just winging it, but hey!”

Describing what fans can expect to see with his new character, Michiel noted he is a “sceptic”.

Michiel continued: “I would describe him as a sceptic who grew up in a house that everybody said was haunted. He never believed any of it.

“He tried to get his writing career off the ground and never really succeeded until this one stupid story about his childhood.

“Then all of a sudden, that was the start of his writing career. And he has everything he wanted. He has the career, but nobody likes him anymore. I guess that’s where I would start.”

Michiel, who is not a horror regular unlike some of his co-stars, explained writer and director Mike Flanagan made it easier to understand the horror genre.

He said: “Mike Flanagan who wrote and directed all 10 episodes really likes to work with the same group of people. I was actually one of the few cast members, but it also goes with crew.

“He keeps the same crew and people around him. That makes for a very nice environment to work in, I have to admit, because everybody’s like family with each other.

“They know each other really well and have made multiple movies together. I enjoyed it very much, especially working with someone like Mike who knows the genre really well. I learned a lot.”

The Haunting of Hill House launches on today.
