Man Utd failed in Milinkovic-Savic transfer swoop because of one star – the full story | Football | Sport

Mourinho does not appear a man primed for the Manchester United sack. After all, why else would you attend Montenegro vs Serbia on a Thursday night?

The answer is Milinkovic-Savic. The Lazio star has been tipped to move to Old Trafford in recent times, most notably back in the summer.

Manchester United were keen. They have watched him develop in Serie A and his power and composure on the ball has seen him become hot property.

But why did a transfer fail to materialise?

Given United’s horrendous summer window, it would be easy to point the finger at Ed Woodward.

He was the man who saw Jose Mourinho’s mood sour before a ball was even kicked. He was also the man who told the United manager that Victor Lindelof was on a par with Toby Alderweireld.

But Woodward was innocent in this case.

Instead, Paul Pogba was the main reason that Milinkovic-Savic did not secure a stunning move to the Premier League.

Pogba wanted out this summer. And, depending on which reports you read, he still does.

When Barcelona flutter their eyelashes at you, it turns your head. And Pogba, a man who has recently admitted to being distracted, took the bait.

United found themselves in a tricky situation late in the window and just days before the new Premier League season. Would their No 6 really be allowed to depart?

Barcelona thought they had a chance, at least.

They submitted a bid but one that was badly-received at Old Trafford. An offer of £45million, plus flop signings Andre Gomes and Yerry Mina, was swiftly rejected.

And that was enough for United to dig their heels in. Missing out on Milinkovic-Savic in the process.

However, they may have dodged a bullet.

Milinkovic-Savic blossomed for Lazio but has found Italian football a tougher nut to crack so far this season.

The Serie A giants wanted £140million to let him go. That’s £51m more than what United paid for Paul Pogba.

And, as things stand, a transfer looks unlikely.

But Mourinho’s presence for Serbia’s match last night suggests that a move is not dead. And, should Pogba go, expect the rumour mill to kick into gear again.
