George Russell and Lewis Hamilton: Are they friends, What happened? | F1 | Sport
But do the pair like each other? Russell has worked at Mercedes as a test driver before confirming his move to Williams today.
The 20-year-old is still cutting his teeth in professional motorsport but is tipped as one for the future.
He is the third Brit to join the F1 grid for 2019, behind Hamilton and McLaren racer Lando Norris.
This season Russell has been placed as the reserve driver for Mercedes, and has also done testing with Force India.
And he appears to have a good relationship with Mercedes top dog Hamilton.
Russell has tweeted his praise of the five-time world champion on a number of occasions.
In September, he branded the Hamilton ’The man!’ after the Mercedes star qualified on pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix.
He has also tweeted regularly about Hamilton when the Brit has been on the podium at Grands Prix.
Discussing Hamilton, Russell told the BBC he has plenty to learn from the 33-year-old.
“It has been an incredible opportunity for me to see how he approaches and deals with a race weekend from within,” Russell said.
“He is portrayed as a guy who from the outside maybe doesn’t look as interested in F1 as he does other aspects of life, but he is extremely motivated and really works hard to get the best out of all of his people.
“Just seeing how he approaches situations and the relationships was a great insight for me.
“My goal is to become F1 world champion one day and to do that I have to be the best, and learning from someone like the Mercedes team and from Lewis is a great opportunity and showed me that you cannot just rely on talent alone.”
