BBC News Watch Naga Munchetty slams Charlie Stayt over word middling on BBC Breakfast | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

As the  presenters spoke to business reporter Sean Farrington about the days financial news on the early morning programme.

With Sean in the midst of his report, Charlie, 56, quizzed the presenter about the word ‘middling’ which he used during the segment.

Sean explained what the term meant, with Naga, 43, joining the conversation to add her opinion on the use of the business jargon.

However, when Charlie asked if ‘middling’ was even a word, Naga quickly corrected her co-host, causing an awkward silence in the studio.

Referring to a chart which was shown on a screen behind him, Sean was stopped in his tracks by Charlie who wanted to ask a question.

Charlie said: “On the subject of jargon, you were explaining the wiggly line, you said the phrase, ‘It’s been middling about’.”

Sean replied: “Yes, official term,” as he waited for Charlie to make his point about his use of business terminology.

Wanting to clarify what the term meant, Charlie repeated: “‘Middling about’.”

Defining the business jargon, Sean stated: “It’s not going up, it’s not going down it’s middling about.”

Naga then joined in, telling Sean: “I don’t think you need ‘about’. It should just be ‘It’s middling,’ as Sean took the comment on board.

However, Charlie then asked both his co-hosts: “Is middling a word?”

Naga immediately responded, saying: “Yes, middling’s a word,” which then led to a brief silence in the studio.

Trying to move on from the awkward moment, Sean carried on with his explanation, repeating: “Something in the middle. Anyway, you’ve got all of that.”

That wasn’t the end of the ‘middling discussion’, as when Sean concluded his report on the UK FTSE 100 chart report, Charlie made one more mention of the term.

The business reporter was referring to The Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 index when reporting on savings and pensions.

Sean said: “The next couple of weeks will really dictate whether it will bounce back like we saw earlier in the year or whether it will keep going down and the concerns keep growing.

Charlie then added: “Or indeed if it’s middling about,” giving a cheeky smirk towards Naga.

Speaking about her love for Kylie Minogue, 50, and Jason Donavan, 50, and their reunion on stage earlier last month, Sean told Naga: “Glad you guys enjoyed it anyway.”

Younger than his co-hots, Sean did not know Naga was so pleased about, with Naga taking his comment as a remark about her age, saying: “Look, you’ve been talking about older workers.. cheeky.”
