How wool pyjamas can help you have a better night’s sleep


Older adults fell asleep up to 15 minutes faster in woolly jim-jams during an experiment.

And young people who wore wool enjoyed an additional seven minutes of sleep compared with those wearing cotton, according to the University of Sydney.

Although the difference may seem small, it could allow sleepyheads to bag an extra hour in bed every eight days – almost six nights’ extra sleep a year.

Researcher Dr Paul Swan said: “Not so long ago sleeping under wool bedding was the norm, and science is now rediscovering the benefits.

“Wool regulates your body temperature far better, keeping you in what is known as ‘the thermal comfort zone’.

“You therefore not only fall asleep quicker, sleep longer, but you also have deeper, better quality sleep. “Enjoying good sleep has become increasingly difficult in modern times, and so anything that helps is great for your mental and physical health.”

Researchers measured heart rate, skin temperature and relative humidity, and brain wave patterns.

They studied 36 adults aged 50-70 who tried out polyester, cotton and merino wool pyjamas. And 17 students were monitored over nine nights wearing long-sleeved pyjamas made of cotton or merino wool.

Both studies found that people fell asleep faster in wool night clothes. Young adults dropped off an average four minutes earlier. 

Those aged 65-70 dozed off after 12 minutes compared with 22 and 27 minutes in polyester and cotton respectively. Wool is a great thermal regulator as it keeps the body warm in cold conditions and cools it when the weather is hot.

Overheating or getting cold are two major causes of people waking up at night. 

Wool is also sustainable and environmentally friendly, and can be more comfortable for those suffering from eczema. 

Doctors have warned that lack of sleep is a huge public health problem linked to disorders such as heart conditions, diabetes and obesity.

Dr Swann is in the UK to present the findings at the Campaign for Wool’s ninth annual Wool Week.

The campaign was launched by Prince Charles to raise awareness of the natural fibre’s benefits.

Wool Week runs until the end of next week and includes exhibitions, pop-up shops and presentations across the country.
