Baldness cure: skin drug makes patient sprout hair

The 13-year-old suffering from eczema was injected with a drug to moderate its effects.

She also had alopecia totalis, a separate condition which meant no hair had grown on her scalp since she was a toddler.

To the surprise of US doctors she experienced “significant” hair regrowth while being treated with dupilumab, a drug marketed under the brand name Dupixent.

The unusual side-effect was studied by Dr Maryanne Makredes Senna, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, who said: “We were quite surprised since this patient hadn’t grown scalp hair since the age of two and other treatments had not helped her.

“As far as we know, this is the first report of hair regrowth with dupilumab in a patient with any degree of alopecia.”

The girl was first given dupilumab in July 2017 and her scalp hair began growing within six weeks. It began to fall out again when treatment was stopped for two months. Doctors now hope to launch a trial with other patients to see if the results are repeated. The case was reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association.
