London Congestion Charge Zone – Hundreds of motorists have needlessly paid the fee


Hundreds of UK drivers have made a common mistake by paying for a charge needlessly.

A new study found that over the course of the past year 516 people had paid a total of £5,934 on the Congestion Charge.

The Congestion Charge is a daily fee that certain motorists must pay to be able to use their vehicle in certain areas across the city.

Research showed that almost a quarter of Britons who drive to have accidentally paid the Congestion Charge once in the last year.

Over half of motorist surveyed believes that the charge zone should be signposted better and seven out of ten believe that other cities should adopt the same system as London.

Around eight out of ten (82 per cent) believe that the congestion charge has had a positive impact on London.

Researchers had actually found prior to the survey that nitrogen dioxide levels have dropped 54.8 per cent since the charge was introduced, with a 12 per cent drop in overall emissions.  

In addition to this, 71 per cent of motorists believe that charges similar to these should be introduced into cities other than including in Birmingham, Liverpool, and Edinburgh.

On average a quarter of drivers surveyed accidentally paid the Congestion Charge over the past yet and 34 per cent said they had forgotten to pay the charge.

Almost eight in ten (78 per cent) of motorists have landed the maximum £160 fine for forgetting.

Surprisingly, two-thirds of drivers believe the Congestion Charge fee should increase.

Currently, the charge for sign the Congestion Charge zone will cost motorists £11.50 daily but on average drivers suggested penalties should increase to £21.

“It was fascinating to hear just how many Britons have accidentally paid the charge due to confusion.

“It certainly pays to pay attention in London and, if in doubt, Google where you are and if you should be paying.”
