Arthritis diet: Prevent joint pain symptoms with ginger spice


Arthritis is a common condition that affects people of all ages, according to the NHS.

About 10 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with arthritis, with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis the most common types.

Patients could reduce the painful symptoms of arthritis by making small changes to their diet.

Eating more ginger is one of the best diet swaps to prevent joint pain, a nutritionist has revealed.

Ginger is a great addition to any arthritis patients’ diet plan, said nutritionist Joy Bauer.

It’s an anti-inflammatory spice that works to reduce joint pain, she added.

“There are multiple benefits of ginger for arthritis,” she said.

“Ginger is a versatile spice that has anti-inflammatory properties, and early research shows it may be helpful in alleviating arthritis pain, making it one of the best foods for arthritis.

“This potent flavouring agent can be used in any course, from appetisers to dessert.”

Fresh ginger has the best anti-inflammatory properties, Bauer added.

“Look for fresh ginger in the produce section of most grocery stores — it is a tan root about the size of very fat fingers.

“Powdered ginger, found in the spice aisle, is used most often in baking and gives a stronger taste to foods — so don’t substitute the same amount of powdered ginger for fresh ginger or it will be overpowering.”

Ginger could also be used to help with digestion, the nutritionist said.

Patients that often sugar from nausea or upset stomachs should consider adding their spice to their daily routine.

One of the best ways to relieve stomach pain with ginger is to slice it, and steep it in hot water, making a ginger tea.

Osteoarthritis – the most common type of arthritis – is caused by a gradual wearing down of the smooth cartilage that lines the joints, said the NHS.

Once cartilage begins to thin out, the tendons and ligaments work harder within the joints.

This causes swelling, which can be painful and stiff.

The hands, spine, knees and hips are most commonly affected by osteoarthritis.

Common arthritis symptoms include joint pain, stiffness, restricted movement, and having warm, red skin over the affected area.
