Man Utd transfer news LIVE: Mbappe contact, £100m Real Madrid deal, Mourinho questioned | Football | Sport
Man Utd chief Ed Woodward contacted PSG about signing Kylian Mbappe this summer, according to reports.
Manchester United chief Woodward was left scrambling for deals on deadline day, ultimately missing out on players Jose Mourinho wanted.
And the Daily Mirror claim the Red Devils failed in a sensational attempt to prise Mbappe away from PSG.
They say United enquired about signing Mbappe from PSG, however, the Ligue 1 giants insisted straight away he would not be going anywhere.
Jose Mourinho has been questioned over his quest to sign a new centre-back.
Premier League commentator Ian Darke says United are not in need of defenders, having conceded the second fewest amount of goals in the league last season.
He says scoring goals was United’s problem and that is where they should have improved in the market.
“If you look at Manchester United last season, it wasn’t really the defence that was the problem,” Darke said on ESPN FC. “They had the second best defence in the Premier League.
“It was scoring, lack of flair, at the other end. So you wondered about the targets in the first place.”
Man Utd discussed Varane move
Manchester United discussed a £100m bid for Raphael Varane late on in the transfer window, but ultimately failed to bring in a new defender for Jose Mourinho.
The Manchester United boss cut a frustrated figure through the window as Ed Woodward failed to land his top targets.
And now it has emerged Varane was also spoken about in the corridors of power at United.
The Times report that United discussed doing a move to the point that Woodward met with Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez in Miami, but he was told Varane would not be leaving.
Jose Mourinho has had to rebuild his squad after numerous “really poor signings” by former United manager Louis van Gaal, Gary Neville claims.
“The club have spent £700m since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, it’s a fortune,” Neville said.
“If you’d have said to me six years ago that Manchester United were the title winners and then would spend £700m in the next few years, I would have said that they would have won multiple titles.
“It hasn’t got well, but you’ve got to remember Jose Mourinho has spent a lot of money, but the Louis van Gaal signings I have to say were really poor.
“So Jose Mourinho has had to get out of the club seven, eight, nine, 10 players, and then get them in.
“I actually like the signings Jose Mourinho has made, they’re more along the lines of the players I’d like to see at this football club.”
