Strictly Come Dancing 2018 line-up: Ben Shephard said his wife doesn’t want him to sign on | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV
As he hosted This Morning today alongside Mollie King, Ben made the surprising admission about why he wouldn’t be taking part.
Roman Kemp appeared on the sofa to deliver some showbiz news to the duo when conversation naturally turned to Strictly Come Dancing.
However, Ben revealed he wouldn’t be in this year’s line-up of the BBC contest despite being asked as he alluded to the so-called Strictly “curse”.
Ben, 43, began: “I was asked but I can’t do it this year.
“My wife doesn’t want me to have an affair,” he added with a laugh.
“I think she’s being very short-sighted,” he said before Roman replied: “My girlfriend said the same thing!”
The pair then shared a high-five in light of the revelations as Mollie laughed along.
Roman, 25, also jumped in on the joke as they discussed his father, former EastEnders actor and Spandau Ballet member, Martin Kemp.
Ben asked the radio host whether Martin had ever been asked to participate by bosses.
Roman replied: “He gets asked every year, but he’s in a happy marriage.”
The notion of a curse surrounding the relationships of those who compete on the show comes after several former contestants split from their partners shortly after participating on the programme.
Subsequently, the show has gathered something of a reputation because of the supposed curse.
Ben had divulged he’d been asked earlier today when he fronted Good Morning Britain.
He made the admission as his co-host Ranvir Singh probed presenter Maya Jama on the rumours she’d be taking to the floor.
“I’m not on Strictly. I don’t think now is the right time, maybe later in life,” Maya, 23, told the hosts.
Ben questioned whether she’d been asked by bosses, but it was clear Maya thought she should keep tight-lipped.
“I’m not sure if I’m allowed to say that stuff,” she confessed to Ben and Ranvir, 40.
But after Ben told her he’d been approached, Maya replied: “Well, yeah, but not for now.”
With the line-up set to be released on Monday, viewers will just have to wait and see.
Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this year.
