Man Utd transfer news: Tottenham wanted two players in Toby Alderweireld negotiations | Football | Sport
Manchester United wanted Tottenham star Alderweireld to be their final summer signing after previous deals for Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant.
However, while the club were hellbent on signing the 29-year-old, they were unable to reach an agreement before yesterday’s 5pm deadline.
Manchester United could yet go for Alderweireld when the transfer window reopens in January, with the player’s value set to drop due to the fact his contract expires in 2020.
Yet the Manchester Evening News say a deal collapsed with Spurs demanding two players to let the centre-back leave.
It is claimed that, earlier in the summer, Spurs chief Daniel Levy reached out to the Red Devils.
The Tottenham transfer guru was keen to lure Anthony Martial to north London.
But, surprisingly, they also enquired about Juan Mata.
Mata remains an important player for United despite not always being guaranteed to start.
The MEN say that, after Tottenham did this, United tried to negotiate a deal for Alderweireld through intermediaries.
However, a deal for Alderweireld was ultimately unable to get over the line.
United endured a torrid transfer window with the Tottenham star not the only target they missed out on.
Leicester’s £75million valuation of Harry Maguire was deemed too steep.
Jerome Boateng stayed at Bayern Munich and now looks likelier to join PSG.
Yerry Mina swapped Barcelona for Everton.
And United’s decision to activate Diego Godin’s £18million release clause was ultimately unsuccessful, with the player choosing to sign a new Atletico Madrid contract instead.
Jose Mourinho yesterday admitted it was time for the Red Devils to focus on football, rather than transfer business behind the scenes.
The 55-year-old said: “The market closes today. It is time for me to stop thinking about the market.
“I am not confident.
“I have to focus on the players I have and the next few matches.”
