Barcelona news: Andres Iniesta in TEARS after making Nou Camp farewell vs Real Sociedad | Football | Sport
Iniesta, who has served Barcelona with distinction for the past 16 years, played for 82 minutes in his side’s 1-0 win over Real Sociedad at the Nou Camp to cap an incredible season.
The midfielder who is departing at the end of the season, was given a standing ovation at a packed ground by the home fans, who had produced a mosaic reading ‘Forever Iniesta’ before the match.
The 34-year-old, who captained the side, was tossed into the air by his jubilant team-mates after the match in much the same they have marked title triumphs by hoisting their managers into the night sky in the past.
The Spanish maestro was afforded a guard of honour on what was an emotional occasion following Barca’s outstanding campaign.
Prior to the match, Ernesto Valverde admitted the Catalan giants wouldn’t be able to find another Iniesta.
He said: “I hope we can end the season well. It’s Andres Iniesta’s farewell, and it’ll be an important match for Barcelona, for what he means to us and what he can be in the future.
“We want to end the season with a good performance and and pay tribute to him with a victory.
“We can’t sign a replica because we won’t find one.
“We’ll have to readjust to another reality because the profile [of his replacement in the XI] will naturally be different.”
Iniesta, who made 674 appearances for Barcelona, leaves the club after winning 22 major titles.
