Google Maps Street View: Which Top Gear star was caught by the Google camera? | Travel News | Travel

Google Maps Street View was launched over 10 years ago with the aim of mapping the globe.

It originally included just a handful of major cities, starting in Manhattan.

It now documents over five million miles of roads, covering 39 countries and around 3,000 cities.

Specially-equipped vehicles, drones and on-foot trekkers take images with 360-degree cameras.

Occasionally pictures are also taken by people on boats, snowmobiles and in underwater apparatus.

Afterwards, the photos are stitched together, with the aim of creating a seamless map of the world.

The latest places to be visited by Google vehicles include Egypt and Nepal, while most of Central America, Africa, India and the Middle East remain undocumented.

Originally started to map the globe, the Street View car has also captured surprising things on its filming trips.

One vehicle in the north of Scotland spotted The Stig on the side of the A82.

The Top Gear character was standing, arms crossed, on the edge of Loch Lomond.

He was dressed in his typical uniform of a white racing suit, with a helmet concealing his identity.

Google regularly captures people going about their everyday lives.

Other times, it can inadvertently catch someone doing something embarrassing.

One shot from Chicago showed a woman standing at the the side of a road, lifting her vest top up with both hands.

However, the shot was thankfully taken just before her indecent exposure.

Some conspiracy theorists think a grainy image captured by Google is proof of alien life

The photo was taken in Buenos Aires and seems to show a UFO.

Writing on website UFO Sighting Daily, Scott C Waring said: “Argentina has an overabundance of UFO sightings compared to the rest of the world and I believe this is how aliens try to hide this particular entrance to their base.”

One camera in Florida caught an alligator lurking near a rack of canoes.

The shot, taken in the Everglades, caught the dangerous predator as it ran into some long grass.
